As most beauty writers will tell you, there’s not much we haven’t seen or heard before. All those peptide-packed skin salves and hyaluronic acid boosters can and will make you jaded. But still, when Shinso Skin Care creator, Nao Tsuruta, gave me his Shinso Mist, part two of his three-pronged regimen that promises to lift and rejuvenate, and said “spray it on one side of your face, and wait,” I did—call it good journalism.

I went about my day, and forgot all about the Mist until a few hours later when I looked in the mirror and saw that one side of my face was slightly more droopy and pallid than the other. “Am I having a stroke?” I thought, initially terrified. The other side, the one that I’d sprayed, was not only glowing, but also about an inch higher. My next thought: surely this is too good to be true.

Not so, according to Tsuruta. An aerospace engineer (that’s right; he’s a rocket scientist), Tsuruta took four years to develop Shinso, which means “deeper layer” in Japanese and consists of deep-sea water, botanical extracts, and a concentrate of marine minerals about 2,000 years old and almost 2,000 feet deep. The Essence—a serum and the first product in the system—has 69 ingredients, including the new darling of the R&D world, superoxide dismutase (SOD). The Mist has 30 unique components, most notably Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF), i.e. Revive Skincare’s Dr. Gregory Bays Brown’s Nobel Prize-winning molecule, which was originally designed to speed up skin rejuvenation in burn victims. Shinso Glow, the final step, is formulated with 27 elements, including fullerenes, another Nobel Prize-winning discovery that are 125 times more effective at protecting the skin from free radicals than other antioxidants like Vitamin C. “Lifting in itself is very difficult to do by natural ingredients,” Tsuruta admits. “But we achieved this through the harmony of ingredients and the synergy effect from each key ingredient,” he explains from his base in Arizona. “Then I applied my scientific background to blend the products. Shinso is different because of the blend and the way it penetrates the skin.”

Since his products have become available, Tsuruta has drawn some pretty influential supporters, including Intraceuticals’ Michelle Peck, the facialist Madonna takes with her on tour and John Galliano keeps with him backstage. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, and Eva Longoria have also become fast fans. Another selling point: If you swear by peels, fillers, Botox, and other injectables, Shinso can actually work as a complimentary treatment; you don’t have to forego one to use the other. And just like that, I was jarred out of complacency.
